Quiet Bells

In 2002 TranzRail reviewed its policy on bells at level crossings in populated areas.  The system had been to switch bells off at night time, but this lessened the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.  The new "quiet bells" direct the sound downwards, thus limiting the spread of soundwaves to disturb local residents.

The policy requires the local RCA to make the application for the installation of quiet (or soft tone) bells, as they have the local knowledge to determine whether the use of quiet bells would make the crossing unsafe for vehicle drivers.

The policy has been endorsed by ONTRACK.
