Level Crossings Working Group

A Rail/Level Crossings Group has been in existence  since 1999, when its focus was to develop a policy for road/rail crossings and bridges, addressing the problems of getting access through the rail corridor for maintenance.  A Deed of Grant was negotiated with TranzRail and approved by the Forum in 2002.  Because the rail network is now managed by ONTRACK, a government agency, the Deed of Grant is under review for its continued relevance.

The next activity was the adoption of the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM), which is due for completion shortly.

Other tasks include:

  • Pedestrian level crossing issues
  • Rail bridge strikes
  • Survey of public and private crossings.

The convenor of the Group is Bill Horne of Rodney District Council.  Other members are:

Bob Gibson       Land Transport New Zealand

Allan Neilson     ONTRACK

Helen Fielding    Ministry of Transport

Clark Simmonds FRONZ
