Industry Code of Practice

The Industry Code of Practice for the Minimisation of Stock Effluent Spillage from Trucks on Roads was released in 1999, to:

  • Provide information on how to reduce the amount of stock effluent falling on to roads:
    • to groups involved in the handling and transportation of livestock - farmers, livestock carriers, meat processing companies, stock and station agents, saleyards operators
    • to those with a resource management role - regional councils and territorial authorities
    • to road controlling authorities - Transit New Zealand and territorial authorities
  • Ensure voluntary and co-operative industry management of the issues.

The reasons for the Code included environmental concerns, road safety issues, and the negative aesthetic impact of effluent on roads.

The Code has three basic principles:

  1. Stock is stood before it is transported
  2. Simple and appropriate methods to collect and dispose of effluent from trucks delivering stock are used
  3. A co-ordinated approach is in place to control this problem by good communications between all those directly and indirectly involved with the handling and transportation of stock and the management and disposal of effluent.
